Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH), commonly known as Mbarara Hospital, is a government-owned Regional Referral and Teaching Hospital located on Kabale-Mbarara Road in Mbarara City, Western Uganda. Founded in the 1930s as a nursing school for the Ankole region and elevated to a district hospital in the 1950s and to a Regional Referral Hospital in the early 1990s, it became the teaching hospital for Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) in 1989. With an official capacity of 350 beds (600 bed capacity widely cited) and serving a catchment of over 4 million people across 12 districts including Mbarara, Bushenyi, Ntungamo, Kiruhura, Ibanda, Buhweju, Rubirizi, Mitooma and Isingiro, plus referrals from Kabale, Masaka, Fort Portal and neighbouring Rwanda and Tanzania, its mission is to provide comprehensive, super-specialized health services, conduct tertiary health training and research, and contribute to health policy. Its Diagnostics Department provides hematology, biochemistry, microbiology and parasitology services that are central to the Medical Laboratory Technician role.
