Job Details

CURE Children's Hospital of Uganda, a Private-Not-For-Profit Christian Hospital specialized in Pediatric Neurosurgery and Integrated Spiritual Ministry, is seeking an Anesthetic Assistant to support safe, efficient, and compassionate anesthesia services. This is a full-time fixed-term renewable position based in Mbale, Uganda. Work Hours: 8.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare and clean anesthesia equipment tailored to each case (age, weight, procedure)
  • Assist anesthesia provider during induction and emergence phases
  • Support daily Operating Room routines as directed by anesthesia provider or Operating Room In-Charge
  • Help transfer patients post-procedure when needed
  • Restock anesthesia cart and store daily and monitor usage and reorder anesthesia supplies promptly
  • Maintain orderly storage with clear shelf labels and enter stock summaries into anesthesia data forms and Operating Room stock cards
  • Safely handle Oxygen, Medical Air, Nitrous Oxide, and Nitrogen cylinders and reorder medical gases in a timely manner
  • Report any issues with gas supply or equipment to the anesthesia supervisor
  • Inspect anesthesia machines and accessories for damage, clean and disinfect machines and accessories daily, and report malfunctions promptly
  • Monitor and record temperature and humidity in the anesthesia drug store and notify supervisor of environmental control issues
  • Comply with hospital health and safety policies, including safe handling of instruments and disposal of sharps, and use PPE appropriately
  • Identify and report hazards or incidents promptly and participate in workplace safety initiatives
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and communicate effectively across disciplines
  • Participate in devotional time before surgery, chapel and departmental Bible studies, and exhibit Christ-like attitude
  • Attend departmental and general staff meetings and pursue continuing professional development activities

Qualifications, Skills and Requirements

  • Completed Certificate in Medical Theatre Techniques or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Must be registered with the Allied Health Professionals Council
  • Ability to handle confidential documents, handle multiple tasks, establish priorities, and work independently
  • Computer literacy is an added advantage
  • Attention to detail, physical stamina to stand for long periods, ability to manage stress
  • Equipment preparation and disinfection skills
  • Excellent communication, report writing, teamwork and interpersonal skills
  • High level planning and organizational skills and good assessment and judgement skills
  • Positive attitude, adherence to Christian ethos, honesty and integrity
  • Flexible attitude to duties and hours of work with ability to remain calm under pressure
