Rakai Health Sciences Program (RHSP) is a collaborative biomedical research and service delivery organization established in 1988. RHSP strives to improve the quality of life of the local and international population through a combination of community-based research, curative services, and prevention strategies in Uganda. With over 30 years of collaboration with Makerere University, Johns Hopkins University, Columbia University, the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI), the Division of Intramural Research at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), and the International Center for Excellence in Research (ICER), RHSP has become one of Africa's leading health research institutions.

Relevance to this role: Data Management is one of RHSP's core Operations alongside Research, Programs, Laboratory and Grants, Science & Training. The Data Management department harnesses sophisticated methodologies to systematically organise, analyse, and leverage critical insights from the Rakai Community Cohort Study (RCCS, ongoing since 1994) and all research and clinical trials. As Data Management Officer you will be at the centre of this evidence-generation engine – designing and validating GCP-compliant databases (including REDCap), ensuring data accuracy and completeness, and translating field data into reliable research outputs that shape national and global HIV/AIDS policy. The role offers direct research impact, database development experience, technical growth in SQL, STATA, R and REDCap, and opportunities for field exposure and team leadership.

Job Details

The Data Management Officer will support data management activities for RHSP research and clinical trials, including database design, data entry system development, data validation, discrepancy reporting, and collaboration with research teams to ensure effective data management practices. The role may also involve field visits to support the smooth running of data systems.

The position will supervise Assistant Data Management Officers and Records Officers, support data backup procedures, train data collectors and quality control teams, compile statistical reports, and assist with timely query resolution.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design RHSP research databases for research studies and clinical trials
  • Develop, test and validate data entry systems
  • Validate data entry systems and ensure data accuracy, completeness and integrity
  • Identify and resolve missing data records, discrepancies and data problems; compile discrepancy reports
  • Supervise Assistant Data Management Officers and Records Officers
  • Train, mentor and support data collectors, editors and quality control teams on data management practices
  • Support data backup procedures and ensure secure, GCP-compliant data handling
  • Compile statistical reports and assist with timely query resolution in collaboration with research teams
  • Collaborate with research teams to ensure effective data management practices across all study phases
  • Undertake field visits to support the smooth running of data management systems

Qualifications, Skills and Requirements

  • Education: Degree in Statistics, Computer Science or related field (Statistics or Computer Science degree required)
  • Database & Querying: Strong SQL database querying skills; ability to design, manage, test and validate databases
  • Statistical Programming: Proficiency in STATA, R or equivalent statistical programming packages
  • Software Proficiency: Excel and Access proficiency
  • Core Competencies: Strong analytical accuracy, data accuracy, analytical thinking, organizational and communication skills, team supervision
  • Nice to have:
    • REDCap database knowledge and experience with GCP-compliant systems
    • GCP database experience
    • Clinical research exposure
    • Epidemiology data knowledge
    • Health research experience
