Job Details

RCS Consult is recruiting on behalf of its client, a food processing company operating a grain process plant, for a Factory Mechanic on a full-time basis in Kampala, Uganda. The Factory Mechanic is responsible for ensuring efficient operation, maintenance, repair and servicing of all mechanical equipment within the grain processing plant, minimizing machine downtime, improving equipment reliability and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards. Salary is not disclosed.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct scheduled preventive maintenance on machines and related equipment; inspect plant machinery regularly to identify wear, damage or potential failures
  • Lubricate moving parts and replace worn-out components in accordance with maintenance schedules and maintain accurate preventive maintenance records and reports
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical faults in cleaning equipment, conveyors, elevators, motors, gearboxes, rollers, sifters, packaging machines and related systems
  • Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns to minimize production downtime and replace defective machine parts to restore optimal operating condition
  • Assist in installation, alignment and commissioning of new machinery and equipment
  • Monitor machine performance and recommend improvements to enhance efficiency and reliability; ensure proper machine calibration and operational standards are maintained
  • Report recurring mechanical issues and recommend long-term solutions
  • Adhere to occupational health and safety standards and ensure all maintenance work complies with company policies and statutory regulations
  • Maintain good housekeeping in workshops and production areas and ensure safe handling and storage of tools, spare parts and maintenance materials
  • Assist in monitoring spare parts and maintenance consumables inventory; maintain maintenance logs, service reports and equipment history records
  • Work closely with production staff to ensure uninterrupted plant operations and support continuous improvement initiatives
  • Participate in technical troubleshooting and root cause analysis exercises

Qualifications, Skills and Requirements

  • Diploma or Certificate in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Maintenance, or related field from a recognized institution; additional training in industrial equipment maintenance is an added advantage
  • Minimum of 2-4 years' experience in mechanical maintenance within a manufacturing, grain processing or maize milling environment (minimum 2 years required); experience in a commercial maize mill or grain processing plant highly desirable
  • Hands-on experience with grain processing machinery, conveyors, elevators, motors and packaging equipment is an added advantage
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical systems used in grain or maize milling operations
  • Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical faults effectively
  • Knowledge of preventive and predictive maintenance practices
  • Good understanding of industrial safety procedures and standards
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and equipment manuals
  • Good problem-solving and analytical skills, good communication and teamwork skills, basic computer literacy
  • High level of integrity, reliability and attention to detail; ability to work under pressure and respond to breakdowns promptly
