CURE Children's Hospital of Uganda, a Private-Not-For-Profit Christian hospital specialized in Pediatric Neurosurgery and Integrated Spiritual Ministry, is seeking a Part-time General Service Assistant to provide housekeeping, laundry services and upkeep for spaces and buildings in the hospital by maintaining cleaning supplies and equipment to ensure a sanitary and orderly environment for patients and staff. The position is based in Mbale, Uganda on a part-time fixed-term renewable basis. Work Hours: 8.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Sweeping, scrubbing and mopping of assigned duty stations including dressing in full protective wear, notifying users of wet floor, scrubbing dirty surfaces and mopping using approved ratios of detergent
  • Cleaning dusty surfaces including blinds, furniture, file cabinets, windowsills and SPC plastic chairs, and clearing ceilings and corners of cobweb infestation
  • Disinfecting contaminated items and surfaces using approved solutions, mixing solutions per guidelines, disinfecting washing areas after linen procedures and disinfecting clean linen tables
  • Providing laundry services for hospital items including picking dirty linen from operating rooms, sorting by degree of soiling and color, spot cleaning heavily soiled items, preparing jik and detergent solution 1:8:3, soaking for 30 minutes, washing, rinsing, hanging for drying, pressing and folding linen and replenishing locations with clean linen
  • Ensuring waste is disposed of appropriately including emptying full garbage bins, taking garbage to incinerator, disinfecting used bins and fitting bucket liners
  • Ensuring infection prevention and control including effective hand hygiene, following policies and procedures, attending departmental IPC training and appropriate usage and storage of cleaning equipment
  • Ensuring mop heads and dusting/wiping towels are disinfected and hung to dry at end of shift and all cleaning equipment is kept in a lock and key room
  • Participating in professional development including identifying short-term training, participating in hospital training and maintaining professional training tracker card with a minimum of 3 self-initiated sessions per fiscal year
  • Ensuring punctuality and attendance, reporting to work as scheduled and on time
  • Participating in department and general co-workers' meetings as scheduled
  • Observing occupational health and safety including working without causing injury, complying with H&S policies and use of Personal Protective Equipment, reporting hazards and incidents
  • Participating in the hospital's Spiritual Ministry programs
  • Performing other official duties as may be assigned by Supervisor

Qualifications, Skills and Requirements

  • Completed certificate in Hotel Management and Institutional Catering preferred
  • Experience in kitchen, laundry and cleaning functions in a recognized hotel, guest house or hospital
  • Strong understanding of the need for an appropriately clean environment for patients
  • Ability to learn how to sterilize material, an area or room
  • Ability to establish priorities and proceed with objectives with minimum supervision
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Able to speak, read and write English
  • Willingness and ability to adopt new knowledge procedures
  • Flexible attitude to duties and to hours of work with ability to remain calm under pressure
