The Centre for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH Centre) at Makerere University School of Public Health seeks to engage a Statistician / Data Analyst (intern / mentee) to strengthen its analytical and evidence-generation capacity across its research and programme portfolio. The role contributes to data management, statistical analysis, visualization, reporting and evidence generation for reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health (RMNCAH).

  • Reporting / Collaboration: Works with project teams, experienced researchers and quantitative specialists within the Centre; attends Centre learning meetings, data review sessions and technical discussions

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the cleaning, management and documentation of Centre datasets
  • Support the production of statistical tables, graphs, dashboards, technical briefs, reports and presentations
  • Conduct analysis of RMNCAH, equity, routine health information system, survey and evaluation indicators
  • Contribute to the interpretation and presentation of findings for technical and non-technical audiences
  • Participate in scientific writing, including preparation of manuscripts, abstracts, reports and grant applications
  • Support data quality checks, analysis plans, codebooks and documentation of analytical processes
  • Attend Centre learning meetings, data review sessions and technical discussions
  • Work with project teams to promote data use for programme learning, decision-making and policy engagement

Qualifications, Skills and Requirements

  • A Master's degree in Statistics, Biostatistics, Quantitative Economics, Population Studies, Demography, Data Science, Epidemiology, Public Health, Monitoring and Evaluation, or a related quantitative field
  • Prior exposure to data management, statistical analysis or public health data
  • Experience with RMNCAH, public health research, routine health information systems, surveys, implementation research or monitoring and evaluation will be an added advantage
  • Working knowledge of at least one statistical package such as Stata, R or Python
  • Interest in maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health, health systems, quality of care, equity and evidence use
  • Good analytical, organizational and documentation skills
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Minimum experience: 6 months in a related role is desirable
