About Makerere University School of Public Health

Makerere University School of Public Health (MakSPH) is one of the leading public health education and research institutions in sub-Saharan Africa and a constituent School of the Makerere University College of Health Sciences. This role is under Kisoboka II — an NIH-funded five-year study implemented by MakSPH in partnership with San Diego State University and the Makerere University Walter Reed Program, focused on reducing hazardous alcohol use and optimising treatment as prevention among men living with HIV in fishing communities.

Job Details

Background: Kisoboka II is an NIH-funded five-year study on reducing hazardous alcohol use and optimising treatment as prevention among men living with HIV in fishing communities. The Intervention Facilitator will deliver study intervention sessions in selected health facilities, working with the project team to ensure high-quality, ethical and protocol-compliant implementation.

Duty Station: Fishing communities in the Kisoboka II study districts: Nakasongola, Buikwe, Mukono, Kayunga and Buvuma — successful applicants must be willing to relocate between assigned field sites as required. Field-based in Central Uganda fishing communities; Head Office at New Mulago Hill Road, Mulago, Kampala, Uganda.

Location: Uganda (field-based)

Employment Type: Full-time, field-based appointment

Duration: One-year appointment, renewable subject to satisfactory performance. The position ends upon completion of intervention implementation, anticipated to last approximately one and a half years.

Reporting: Reports to the Intervention Supervisor and works closely with the broader project team.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Deliver intervention sessions in selected health facilities in accordance with the intervention protocol and study standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Maintain fidelity to the intervention protocol and study SOPs throughout implementation.
Send participant reminders, document progress and support retention in intervention sessions.
Implement intervention components assigned to the relevant study arm.
Attend debrief and other scheduled meetings with the Intervention Supervisor and project team.
Prepare and submit weekly performance review reports.
Monitor and promptly report potential adverse events.
Uphold confidentiality and the highest research ethics standards.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Intervention Supervisor.

Qualifications, Skills and Requirements

Degree in education, health education, health promotion, public health, adult and continuing education, or social work; equivalent practical experience in health, HIV, alcohol or substance-use interventions will be considered.
At least two years' experience in health research, intervention delivery or health programme implementation, preferably in fishing-community settings.
Training in general or HIV/AIDS counselling, with experience motivating participants through multi-session interventions.
Strong communication skills in English and Luganda; ability to work independently and effectively in a team, with close attention to detail.
Experience facilitating adult group sessions, motivational interviewing, or prior work in the study districts is an added advantage.
