Job Details

Medical Officers are responsible for providing comprehensive clinical care to patients in both outpatient and inpatient settings at Holy Innocents Children's Hospital in Mbarara City, Uganda. This is a full-time position based in Mbarara City. Working hours are 8 hours per day. Salary is not disclosed.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough medical histories, physical examinations, and differential diagnoses for patients presenting with various conditions.
  • Develop and implement evidence-based treatment plans, prescribe medications, and initiate appropriate therapeutic interventions.
  • Provide rapid assessment and stabilization for urgent and emergency cases, recognizing clinical red flags early.
  • Monitor patient progress, review treatment outcomes, and adjust care plans as necessary.
  • Identify patients requiring specialist care and make timely referrals to consultants or higher-level facilities.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential, and up-to-date patient medical records.
  • Communicate diagnoses, treatment plans, and prognosis clearly to patients and families.
  • Work collaboratively with nurses, clinical officers, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Participate in continuous medical education, clinical audits, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Supervise and mentor junior clinical staff, including Clinical Officers and Interns.

Qualifications, Skills and Requirements

  • Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 1 year of relevant clinical experience.
  • Knowledge of clinical assessment, treatment planning, and emergency care.
  • Skills in patient monitoring, referral coordination, and medical record keeping.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and mentoring skills.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and quality improvement.
