Job Details

Lead safe, efficient and financially sustainable pharmaceutical services at the assigned hospital (C-Care IMC Mbale). The Pharmacist ensures appropriate medicine use, reliable availability, regulatory compliance, high-quality patient care and effective performance of the pharmacy team. This is a full-time position based in Mbale, Mbale District, Uganda, reporting within the hospital pharmacy/clinical governance structure and working closely with clinical, nursing, finance, procurement, supply chain, quality, HR and hospital management teams.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Review prescriptions for clinical appropriateness, interactions, contraindications, allergies and correct dosing.
  • Provide medicine information, patient counselling, medication reconciliation and clinical pharmacy support.
  • Lead medication-error, near-miss, adverse-drug-reaction and pharmacovigilance processes, including root cause analysis (RCA) and corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
  • Promote rational prescribing, antimicrobial stewardship and formulary compliance.
  • Maintain medicine availability through forecasting, timely ordering, redistribution and min-max stock controls.
  • Ensure accurate receipt, storage, issue and reconciliation of stock, including FEFO/FIFO, cold chain and controlled medicines.
  • Control stock-outs, expiries, variances, emergency purchases, revenue leakage and unbilled medicines.
  • Monitor revenue, cost of sales, gross contribution, mark-up and pricing compliance; recommend corrective action.
  • Ensure compliance with legislation, professional requirements, accreditation standards, SOPs and licences.
  • Conduct pharmacy audits, close findings and lead measurable quality-improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain controlled-medicine records and manage recalls, quarantines and approved disposal.
  • Submit accurate reports and participate in clinical governance, Medicines and Therapeutics, quality and stewardship forums.
  • Plan staffing and duty rosters; set objectives; supervise, coach and assess pharmacy personnel.
  • Coordinate induction, competency development and continuing professional education.
  • Collaborate with clinical, nursing, finance, procurement, supply chain, quality, HR and hospital management teams.
  • Escalate significant patient-safety, operational, financial or regulatory risks promptly.

Qualifications, Skills and Requirements

  • Bachelor of Pharmacy degree from a recognised institution.
  • Full registration and valid annual practising licence in Uganda.
  • Minimum three yearsโ€™ post-registration experience, preferably in a hospital.
  • Supervisory experience desirable; clinical pharmacy, supply chain or quality training is an advantage.
  • Competence in pharmacy systems, data analysis and Microsoft Office.
  • Strong knowledge of rational medicine use, pharmacovigilance, antimicrobial stewardship and inventory management (FEFO/FIFO, cold chain, controlled medicines).
  • Ability to lead audits, quality improvement, and regulatory compliance.
  • Excellent counselling, communication, teamwork and leadership skills.
