Job Details

Makerere University invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for the position of Senior Technician, Department of Physiology. The role provides technical leadership for laboratory operations, student practicals and research activities under the Head of Department.

  • Duty Station: Kampala | Kampala (College of Health Sciences, Main Campus, Makerere Hill Road, Kampala)
  • Reporting To: Head of Department
  • Tenure of Appointment: 4-year contract
  • Remuneration: PU6.2 (Makerere University Salary Scale)
  • Employment Type: Contract (Full-time, 8 Work Hours)

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure harmonious working relationships amongst staff under his/her care
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and facilities
  • Maintain financial and other resources in the course of duty
  • Participate in research & consultancy
  • Compile reports and inventories
  • Prepare and supervise students' practicals
  • Maintain guidelines & regulations to ensure quality control and safety in the workplace
  • Induct and mentor support staff in technical skills
  • Perform any other official duties as assigned by the Head of Department

Qualifications, Skills and Requirements

  • Education:
    • Master of Science in Biomedical Laboratory Sciences and Management or related discipline
    • At least an upper second Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Laboratory Technology
  • Experience: At least 5 years working experience in Laboratory work
  • Skills / Competences:
    • Ability to handle clients in a courteous manner
    • Interpersonal skills and team work
    • Ability to communicate precisely
    • Analytical skills
    • Proficiency in using machines and computers
    • Time management
    • Concern for safety
  • Level of Education: Postgraduate degree
  • Experience in Months: 60 months (5 years) stated; source also lists 12 months field — substantive requirement is 5 years
