Smart Applications International (Uganda) Ltd is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Software Engineer Back-End (Software Engineer I) to join its Digital Transformation Directorate in Uganda. The role is full-time and involves contributing to the development, testing, maintenance, and continuous improvement of software applications. The successful candidate will work under the guidance of a Software Engineer II / Senior Engineer, participate in Agile sprint activities including sprint planning and daily stand-ups, and collaborate with team members to deliver quality software solutions. Duty station is Uganda (Kampala). No salary disclosed. Reports to Software Engineer II / Senior Engineer.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing small to medium software modules as assigned by Software Engineer II / Senior Engineer.
  • Write clean, efficient, maintainable, and well-documented code.
  • Participate in peer code reviews and technical discussions.
  • Conduct basic unit testing and contribute to automated test cases.
  • Support the maintenance of project documentation, internal tools, and utilities.
  • Apply established development practices, coding standards, and version-control processes.
  • Actively participate in sprint planning, daily stand-ups, and other Agile team activities.
  • Collaborate with other team members to troubleshoot issues and deliver quality software solutions.

Qualifications, Skills and Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related discipline.
  • 1-2 years of professional software development experience (internships and entry-level experience may be considered).
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language, such as Python, Java, JavaScript, or C#.
  • Familiarity with Git or other source-control systems.
  • Basic understanding of Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) and the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC).
  • Strong willingness to learn, develop technical skills, and grow within a software engineering environment.
  • Desirable: Exposure to front-end or back-end frameworks such as Angular & Java Spring Boot.
  • Desirable: Experience working in an Agile/Scrum development environment.
  • Desirable: Familiarity with development environments and tools such as VS Code or IntelliJ IDEA.
  • Desirable: Basic knowledge of REST APIs and database interactions.
