The Swahili Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality, engaging, and effective instruction in Kiswahili to secondary school students in the Serere community, in line with the national curriculum and Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) syllabus. The role combines strong subject mastery with practical, learner-centered teaching methods, equipping students with listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in Kiswahili, as well as an appreciation of East African language and culture. The Swahili Teacher works closely with the Director of Studies, fellow subject teachers, and AsOne Ministries leadership to promote academic excellence within a Christ-centered learning environment. Duty station is Luuka / Serere Community, Uganda. This is a full-time position. Salary is not disclosed.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Plan, prepare, and deliver Kiswahili lessons in line with the national secondary curriculum and UNEB syllabus requirements.
• Develop schemes of work, lesson plans, and assessment schedules for all assigned classes (O-Level and/or A-Level as applicable).
• Deliver clear, engaging lessons that build strong grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, composition (insha), and oral communication skills in Kiswahili.
• Use varied teaching methods, including guided reading, role-play, songs, dialogue practice, and discussion-based analysis of set texts and oral literature.
• Set, administer, and mark class tests, assignments, compositions, and examinations, providing timely and constructive feedback.
• Track learner performance and progress, identifying gaps and providing remedial support where needed.
• Prepare students for national examinations (UCE/UACE) and internal assessments, ensuring full syllabus coverage.
• Guide students in the study of prescribed Kiswahili set texts (novels, plays, poetry), proverbs, and oral traditions relevant to East African culture.
• Integrate regional integration awareness, East African culture, and communication skills in line with Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES) guidelines.
• Organize and supervise oral practice sessions, vocabulary drills, and public speaking or debate sessions in Kiswahili.
• Guide students in the correct use of Kiswahili grammar, sentence structure, comprehension techniques, and composition/essay writing.
• Facilitate appreciation of Kiswahili literature and oral traditions through class readings, drama performances, poetry recitals, and language clubs.
• Coordinate with school administration on procurement of Kiswahili textbooks, readers, dictionaries, and other language resources.
• Organize Kiswahili debates, drama festivals, cultural days, or language competitions.
• Mentor students interested in language, translation, regional trade, diplomacy, and communication-related careers.
• Encourage participation in Kiswahili clubs, debate clubs, drama clubs, competitions, quizzes, and academic exhibitions.
• Provide guidance and support to students struggling with Kiswahili concepts, including extra tuition where needed.
• Maintain accurate records of student attendance, performance, and continuous assessment.
• Contribute to budgeting and procurement for textbooks, set texts, dictionaries, and teaching aids and maintain stock control.
• Work collaboratively with the Director of Studies and fellow subject teachers to align academic planning.
• Participate in departmental meetings, staff briefings, and school-wide events.
• Engage parents and the local community in supporting students' language learning.
• Perform additional duties as assigned by school leadership.

Qualifications, Skills and Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree or Diploma in Education, with Kiswahili as a teaching subject, or a related field.
• Minimum of 2 years' teaching experience at secondary school level, preferably teaching Kiswahili.
• Sound knowledge of the national secondary Kiswahili curriculum, UNEB syllabus, and Ministry of Education and Sports guidelines.
• Strong command of Kiswahili grammar, composition, comprehension, and literary analysis techniques.
• Fluency in spoken and written Kiswahili, with the ability to teach effectively at all secondary levels.
• Registered/licensed with the relevant Ugandan teaching body where applicable (e.g., valid Teaching Practice Certificate/registration with MoES).
• A demonstrated personal Christian faith and commitment to Christ-centered education.
• Passionate about teaching and mentoring young people in language and communication skills.
• Patient, clear, and skilled at breaking down complex grammatical or literary concepts.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with students, staff, and parents.
• High level of integrity, responsibility, and accountability.
• Skilled in composition marking, oral literature instruction, and facilitation of debate, drama, or oral presentation activities in Kiswahili.
• Competent in lesson planning, assessment design, and academic record-keeping.
• Basic proficiency in using technology and instructional aids for lesson preparation and delivery.
