Job Details

The Anaesthetic Officer assists in the safe provision of anaesthesia and perioperative care under appropriate clinical supervision and in accordance with professional standards at Uganda Martyrs' Hospital (UMH) Diocese of Jinja. The role is based in Jinja, Uganda on a full-time basis (8 work hours). This is 1 position. The hospital operates under the Diocese of Jinja and is part of the Uganda Catholic Medical Bureau (UCMB) network, a faith-based health system committed to serving communities through healthcare, evangelization and social transformation. Base salary is not disclosed. Reporting within the surgical/theatre team and working closely with surgeons, theatre nurses and other surgical team members.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assess and prepare patients for anaesthesia as authorised.
  • Review relevant clinical information and investigations.
  • Prepare anaesthetic equipment, medicines, and supplies.
  • Assist with induction, maintenance, and recovery from anaesthesia.
  • Monitor patients' vital signs and physiological status throughout procedures.
  • Assist with airway management.
  • Recognise and promptly respond to anaesthetic complications and emergencies.
  • Maintain anaesthetic records accurately.
  • Assist with patient positioning and safe transfer.
  • Ensure anaesthetic equipment is cleaned, checked, and serviceable.
  • Maintain appropriate infection prevention and control standards.
  • Participate in pre-operative and post-operative patient care.
  • Work closely with surgeons, theatre nurses, and other members of the surgical team.

Qualifications, Skills and Requirements

  • Recognised qualification in Anaesthesia/Anaesthetic Practice - Degree/Diploma in Anaesthesia.
  • Registration with the appropriate professional regulatory body.
  • Valid practising licence.
  • Relevant theatre or anaesthesia experience is desirable.
  • Minimum experience of 12 months (1 year) preferred.
  • Level of Education: Bachelor degree / Diploma accepted.
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary surgical team and maintain accurate records and infection control standards.
  • Successful candidates will undergo reference checks and safeguarding screening in accordance with Diocesan recruitment policies.
