Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Control access to hospital premises, verifying identification of visitors and staff
• Conduct regular patrols of the facility, including wards, parking areas, and perimeter
• Monitor CCTV cameras and alarm systems for suspicious activity
• Respond to security incidents, disturbances, or emergencies promptly
• Enforce hospital policies on safety, visitation, and restricted areas
• Maintain a visitor logbook and issue visitor passes as required
• Assist in emergency evacuations and fire safety procedures
• Report any safety hazards, theft, or damage to property immediately

Qualifications, Skills and Requirements

• Education: High School certificate (Uganda Certificate of Education - UCE level)
• Experience: Minimum 12 months (1 year) of relevant experience in security/guarding
• Ability to control access and verify identification professionally
• Knowledge of CCTV monitoring, alarm systems and patrol procedures
• Ability to respond quickly to security incidents, disturbances and emergencies
• Familiarity with enforcing safety, visitation and restricted area policies
• Good record-keeping skills for visitor logbooks and passes
• Knowledge of emergency evacuation and fire safety procedures
• Vigilance, integrity, good communication and interpersonal skills
• Physically fit and able to work 8-hour shifts, including patrolling

About Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital

Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, commonly known as Mbarara Hospital, is a government-owned regional referral and teaching hospital for the Medical School of Mbarara University of Science and Technology and other institutions including Bishop Stuart University. It started in the 1930s as a nursing school for the SouthWestern Ankole region, became a district hospital in the 1950s, and was elevated to Regional Referral status in the early 1990s. Official bed capacity is 350 beds (commonly cited as 600 with floor cases) and it serves a catchment population of over four million people across Mbarara, Bushenyi, Ntungamo, Kiruhura, Ibanda, Buhweju, Rubirizi, Mitooma and Isingiro, plus referrals from Kabale, Masaka, Fort Portal, Rwanda and Tanzania. The hospital's mission is to provide comprehensive, super-specialized health services, conduct tertiary health training and research, and contribute to health policy. It offers departments including Internal Medicine, Obstetrics/Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Pharmacy and Stores, General Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Diagnostics, Community Health, Research and Innovation, and Finance & Administration, and operates 24 hours in Mbarara City. Working as an Askari/Security Guard in the Private Wing places you at the front line of patient, staff and visitor safety in one of Western Uganda's most important public health institutions.
