Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH) is a government-owned 600-bed Regional Referral and Teaching Hospital in Mbarara City, South-Western Uganda. Founded in 1940 (originating as a small health centre in the 1930s, officially opened as a hospital in 1953), it is the referral hospital for the Western Region (Mbarara, Bushenyi, Ntungamo, Kiruhura, Ibanda, Isingiro) and the teaching hospital for Mbarara University of Science and Technology. Operating 24 hours under the Ministry of Health, the hospital delivers comprehensive inpatient, outpatient, emergency, surgical, maternal/child health, diagnostics and community health services. Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital invites suitably qualified candidates to fill vacant posts in its Private Wing. The Assistant Nursing Officer (Nursing) will supervise and coordinate nursing activities within assigned wards/departments and ensure high-quality, patient-centred nursing care in collaboration with medical officers and allied health professionals.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervise and coordinate nursing activities within assigned wards or departments.
  • Assess patient conditions, develop nursing care plans, and implement evidence-based nursing interventions.
  • Administer complex medications, intravenous therapies, and wound care in line with clinical protocols.
  • Lead and mentor enrolled nurses and nursing students during shifts.
  • Respond to medical emergencies and provide advanced life support when needed.
  • Liaise with medical officers, therapists, and other healthcare professionals for holistic patient care.
  • Manage ward resources, including equipment, supplies, and staffing schedules.
  • Maintain high standards of infection prevention and control (IPC) practices and ensure patient safety.

Qualifications, Skills and Requirements

  • Suitably qualified Candidate for Assistant Nursing Officer – Nursing (per Public Service requirements).
  • Level of Education: Bachelor's Degree - Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (or equivalent nursing qualification at bachelor's degree level).
  • Experience: Minimum 12 months (1 year) of relevant nursing experience required.
  • Registration with the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council and valid practising license is an added advantage where applicable.
  • Demonstrated competence in patient assessment, care planning, medication administration, IV therapy and wound care.
  • Ability to supervise, mentor and coordinate junior nursing staff and students.
  • Strong emergency response, critical thinking, communication and teamwork skills.
  • Commitment to infection prevention and control and to professional ethics and patient-centred care.
