Job Details
The Dental Officer provides preventive, diagnostic, and treatment services for patients with oral and dental health needs and contributes to community oral health promotion. This is a full-time position based in Jinja, Uganda. The role reports within the clinical services structure of Uganda Martyrs' Hospital (UMH) Diocese of Jinja and involves direct patient care, emergency dental care, patient education and participation in community dental and public health activities. Work hours are 8 hours per day. Base salary is not disclosed. The position is for 1 vacancy.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct dental examinations and take relevant patient histories.
- Diagnose common dental and oral conditions.
- Provide appropriate dental treatment within professional scope.
- Perform routine dental procedures as trained and authorised.
- Provide emergency dental care where required.
- Promote oral hygiene and preventive dental practices.
- Provide patient education on oral health.
- Participate in community dental and public health activities.
- Maintain accurate dental records.
- Follow infection prevention and control procedures.
- Refer complex cases to appropriate specialists.
- Maintain dental instruments and equipment.
- Participate in clinical audits, health promotion, and quality improvement activities.
Qualifications, Skills and Requirements
- Recognised qualification in Dentistry or Public Health Dentistry/Dental Officer training as applicable - Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) / Diploma in Public Health Dentistry.
- Registration with the relevant professional regulatory body and valid practising licence from the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council (UMDPC).
- Valid practising licence is mandatory.
- Relevant clinical experience is an advantage - at least 2 years of clinical experience required (12 months minimum stated in posting; additional details cite 2-3 years).
- Knowledge of infection prevention and control procedures.
- Skills in routine dental procedures, diagnosis and treatment of common oral conditions.
- Commitment to patient education, preventive dentistry and community oral health promotion.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and refer complex cases appropriately.
