Enrolled Midwife
About Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital
Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH) is a government-owned Regional Referral Hospital and teaching hospital for the Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST), located in Mbarara City, Western Uganda. Founded in the 1930s as a nursing school for the South-Western Ankole region, elevated to District Hospital in the 1950s and to Regional Referral status in the early 1990s, the hospital now serves a catchment population of over 4 million people across Mbarara, Bushenyi, Ntungamo, Kiruhura, Ibanda, Buhweju, Rubirizi, Mitooma, Isingiro and receives referrals from Kabale, Masaka, Fort Portal, Rwanda and Tanzania. Official bed capacity is 350 beds (functional capacity ~600).
The hospital's mission is to provide comprehensive, super-specialized health services, conduct tertiary health training, research and contribute to health policy. For midwifery professionals, MRRH is highly relevant: the Obstetrics & Gynaecology / Maternity department is one of the most active departments in the hospital, handling a very high volume of deliveries annually and providing integrated maternal and child health services, antenatal care, delivery services, postnatal care, family planning, and community outreach. The hospital also offers family planning clinics, health education, outreach and radio talk shows, and works with partners including USAID (G2G for HIV services) and Medicine for Humanity (obstetric fistula centre of excellence). This private wing position offers exposure to high-volume, referral-level maternal and newborn care within a teaching and research environment.
