About Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital

Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH) is a government-owned Regional Referral Hospital and teaching hospital for Mbarara University of Science and Technology, located in Mbarara City, Western Uganda. Established in the 1930s as a nursing school, it became a district hospital in the 1950s and a Regional Referral Hospital in the early 1990s. It now serves over 4 million people in the Ankole sub-region (Mbarara, Bushenyi, Ntungamo, Kiruhura, Ibanda, Buhweju, Rubirizi, Mitooma, Isingiro) plus referrals from Kabale, Masaka, Fort Portal, Rwanda and Tanzania. Official bed capacity is 350 (operational ~600). Its mission is to provide comprehensive, super-specialized health services, conduct tertiary health training and research, and contribute to health policy. For nursing/midwifery staff, the Private Wing offers exposure to busy obstetric, paediatric, medical and surgical services within a large referral and teaching environment, with opportunities for mentorship from specialists and MUST faculty.

Job Details

Vacancy: Enrolled Nurse (Private Wing - advertised as Enrolled Nurse 7 positions) at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital. Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates to fill vacant posts in the Private Wing. The role is full-time, based at the hospital's Private Wing in Mbarara. Work Hours: 8 hours per day. Industry: Healthcare. Category: Healthcare / Health/Medicine. Base Salary: Not Disclosed. Duty Station: Mbarara - Private Wing, Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, Mbarara City, Uganda. Reporting to the Ward In-Charge / Senior Nursing Officer, Private Wing. The hospital provides 24-hour emergency and referral services and is a teaching site for doctors, nurses, pharmacists and laboratory technologists.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide antenatal care, including health assessments, education, and screening for expectant mothers.
  • Assist in normal labor and delivery, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for the mother and baby.
  • Monitor fetal heart rate, maternal vital signs, and progress of labor.
  • Provide immediate newborn care, including APGAR scoring, cord care, and breastfeeding support.
  • Conduct postnatal care for both mother and baby, including wound care and family planning advice.
  • Identify high-risk pregnancies and refer appropriately to medical officers.
  • Maintain accurate delivery records, maternal charts, and birth registers.
  • Promote maternal and child health through community education and outreach programs.

Qualifications, Skills and Requirements

  • Level of Education: High School - Certificate in Enrolled Nursing and/or Enrolled Midwifery (or equivalent) from a recognized institution and registration with the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council (where applicable).
  • Minimum experience: 24 months (2 years) of relevant nursing/midwifery experience.
  • Valid practicing license preferred.
  • Knowledge of antenatal, intrapartum, postnatal and newborn care protocols.
  • Ability to monitor vital signs, fetal heart rate and labor progress accurately.
  • Skills in newborn care including APGAR scoring, cord care and breastfeeding support.
  • Competence in wound care, family planning counselling and health education.
  • Good record-keeping and reporting skills for delivery registers and maternal charts.
  • Ability to identify high-risk pregnancies and refer promptly.
  • Good communication, teamwork and compassionate patient care.
