Laboratory Technologist
Job Details
The Laboratory Technologist performs laboratory investigations accurately and safely to support diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, and disease prevention at Uganda Martyrs' Hospital (UMH) Diocese of Jinja. The hospital is seeking 4 Technologists – 2 positions requiring Degree/Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology/Science and 2 positions requiring Laboratory Certificate. This is a full-time role based in Jinja, Uganda, with 8 work hours per day. Base salary is not disclosed. All successful candidates will undergo reference checks and safeguarding screening in accordance with Diocesan recruitment policies. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Receive, identify, label, and process patient specimens.
- Perform laboratory tests according to approved procedures.
- Prepare reagents and laboratory materials.
- Operate, maintain, and monitor laboratory equipment.
- Conduct quality control procedures.
- Record, verify, and report laboratory results accurately and promptly.
- Communicate critical or abnormal results through the appropriate channels.
- Maintain proper specimen storage and disposal procedures.
- Follow laboratory biosafety and infection prevention standards.
- Safely handle potentially infectious specimens and hazardous materials.
- Maintain accurate laboratory records and registers.
- Monitor laboratory supplies and report shortages.
- Participate in equipment maintenance and calibration.
- Assist with internal and external quality assurance activities.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information.
Qualifications, Skills and Requirements
- Recognised qualification in Medical Laboratory Technology/Science – Degree/Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (2 positions) or Certificate in Medical Laboratory Technology (2 positions).
- Registration with the relevant professional regulatory body where applicable.
- Valid practising licence.
- Relevant laboratory experience is desirable – minimum 12 months experience required.
- Level of Education: Bachelor Degree/Diploma/Certificate in related field.
- Ability to follow laboratory biosafety, infection prevention and quality control standards.
- Strong record keeping, equipment operation and communication skills.
- Commitment to confidentiality and professional ethics.
