About Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital

Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, commonly known as Mbarara Hospital, is a government-owned regional referral and teaching hospital located in Mbarara City, South-Western Uganda. The hospital was founded in the 1930s as a nursing school for the South-Western Ankole region, elevated to a district hospital in the 1950s and to a Regional Referral Hospital in the early 1990s. It is the teaching hospital for Mbarara University of Science and Technology (training doctors, nurses, pharmacists and laboratory technologists) and also hosts interns from Bishop Stuart University, Mayanja Memorial Hospital and St. Francis Hospital Mutolere.

The hospital's Mission is to provide comprehensive, super specialized health services, conduct tertiary health training, research and contribute to health policy. With an official bed capacity of 350 beds (operational capacity up to 600 beds), it serves a catchment population of over four million people comprising Mbarara, Bushenyi, Ntungamo, Kiruhura, Ibanda, Buhweju, Rubirizi, Mitooma and Isingiro, and receives referrals from Kabale, Masaka, Fort Portal and neighboring countries Rwanda and Tanzania. A new three-block complex and a Master Plan guide ongoing developments.

For the Private Wing, support services such as laundry are critical to infection prevention and control, patient dignity, and continuous availability of clean linen to all clinical departments.

Job Details

Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital invites suitably qualified candidates to fill the vacant post of Laundry Attendant in its Private Wing. This is a Full-time position based at Mbarara, Uganda. The role is responsible for the collection, processing and distribution of hospital linens, uniforms and patient clothing in strict compliance with hygiene and infection-control standards.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Collect, sort, and launder hospital linens, uniforms, and patient clothing.
• Operate industrial washing machines, dryers, and ironing equipment safely.
• Inspect items for stains, damage, or wear and treat accordingly.
• Fold, pack, and distribute clean linens to various hospital departments.
• Maintain proper inventory of linen and report shortages or losses.
• Ensure laundry areas are clean, organized, and comply with hygiene standards.
• Handle contaminated linen with strict adherence to infection control protocols.
• Assist with minor repairs to linen (sewing buttons, mending tears).

Qualifications, Skills and Requirements

• High School Certificate (Uganda Certificate of Education - UCE) - Level of Education: high school.
• 12 months experience preferred (Experience in Months: 12).
• Ability to operate industrial laundry equipment safely and efficiently.
• Knowledge of hygiene standards and strict adherence to infection control protocols for contaminated linen.
• Attention to detail in inspecting, sorting, staining and wear treatment.
• Good organizational and inventory management skills.
• Ability to maintain clean and organized laundry areas.
• Basic mending/sewing skills for minor linen repairs.
