Uganda Martyrs' Hospital (UMH) Diocese of Jinja is urgently recruiting a self-motivated, patient-centred and passionate Medical Clinical Officer to join its clinical team. UMH is a newly established Private Not for Profit (PNFP) hospital founded by the Trustees of the Catholic Diocese of Jinja under the Ecclesiastical Province of Tororo Archdiocese, whose mission combines clinical excellence with Christ-centered compassion to heal body, mind and spirit without discrimination. The hospital is envisaged to become a teaching and research hospital offering quality and affordable services to both affluent and vulnerable communities.

UCMB, as the health office of the Uganda Episcopal Conference based at 672 Hanlon Road, P.O. Box 2886, Kampala (admin@ucmb.co.ug, +256-312 266 590), coordinates the Catholic health network of 34 hospitals, 19 training schools and 271 Lower Level Units — providing strong technical support, mentorship, and continuous professional development opportunities for staff.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Conduct patient consultations, taking comprehensive medical histories and performing physical examinations; diagnose common acute and chronic medical conditions and identify clinical red flags requiring urgent intervention.
Develop and implement evidence-based treatment plans; prescribe medications in accordance with national treatment guidelines and formularies.
Manage patients in both outpatient and inpatient settings, including initiating and adjusting care plans; monitor progress, review outcomes and adjust care as necessary.
Provide rapid assessment and stabilization for urgent and emergency cases; manage medical emergencies including trauma, respiratory distress, cardiac events and acute infections; administer first aid and emergency interventions.
Perform minor surgical and medical procedures within scope of practice such as suturing wounds, incision and drainage of abscesses, removal of foreign bodies, lumbar punctures, joint aspirations and wound debridement.
Identify patients requiring specialist care and make timely referrals to Medical Officers, Consultants or higher-level facilities; coordinate with nurses, pharmacists and laboratory staff to ensure integrated care and facilitate continuity through proper handover and follow-up.
Maintain accurate, confidential and up-to-date patient medical records; document clinical findings, treatment provided and follow-up plans; prepare reports on clinical activities and patient outcomes.
Communicate diagnoses, treatment plans and prognosis clearly to patients and families; provide health education on disease prevention, treatment adherence, nutrition, healthy lifestyles and chronic disease management.
Participate in community health outreach, health promotion, immunization, disease surveillance and public health initiatives; educate communities on preventive practices and early detection.
Supervise and mentor junior clinical staff including intern and student clinical officers; provide guidance to nursing and support staff on clinical matters.
Participate in continuous professional development, training, workshops and clinical meetings; stay updated on current guidelines and best practices; participate in clinical audits and quality improvement initiatives.
Work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams and foster a positive, supportive working environment.
Support infection prevention and control (IPC) standards, safe disposal of biomedical waste, and accurate inventory and stock management of medical sundries where required in theatre/ward settings.

Qualifications, Skills and Requirements

Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Community Health.
Registered with the relevant professional regulatory body (Uganda Allied Health Professionals Council / Allied Health Practitioners Council, Kenya Clinical Officers Council where applicable).
Valid practicing license (valid professional operation license).
Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE / O-Level) equivalent.
A recognized Certificate in Theatre Techniques or Medical Theatre Assistant course from a certified health training institution is listed as an added advantage in the source (where applicable).
Relevant clinical experience in a hospital or health centre setting — source indicates "At least 5 years of experience" (summary) and also "1 to 2 years (12 months) in a busy hospital surgical environment is typically preferred"; candidates should demonstrate hospital-based experience.
Strong clinical assessment, diagnosis, emergency care and minor procedural skills; knowledge of national treatment guidelines.
