Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, a government-owned Regional Referral and Teaching Hospital for Mbarara University of Science and Technology, is inviting applications from suitably qualified candidates to fill vacant posts in its Private Wing. This vacancy is for a Medical Laboratory Technician based at the hospital in Mbarara, Uganda.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collect, process, and analyze biological specimens (blood, urine, sputum, stool, tissue).
  • Perform routine laboratory tests, including hematology, biochemistry, microbiology, and parasitology.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment such as microscopes, analyzers, and centrifuges.
  • Prepare reagents, stains, and culture media for diagnostic procedures.
  • Record and report test results accurately to requesting clinicians.
  • Ensure proper storage and disposal of hazardous materials and biohazardous waste.
  • Maintain laboratory inventory and order supplies as needed.
  • Adhere to strict quality control and biosafety protocols at all times.

Qualifications, Skills and Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree (as indicated by Level of Education: Bachelor Degree) - preferably in Medical Laboratory Science/Technology or related biomedical field.
  • Minimum of 12 months (1 year) of relevant laboratory experience.
  • Knowledge of routine hematology, biochemistry, microbiology and parasitology testing.
  • Competence in operating and maintaining laboratory equipment (microscopes, analyzers, centrifuges).
  • Skills in preparing reagents, stains and culture media and in accurate recording/reporting of results.
  • Familiarity with biosafety, infection prevention and control, and quality assurance protocols.
  • Ability to manage laboratory inventory, storage and safe disposal of biohazardous waste.

About Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital

Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital is a government-owned referral and teaching hospital located in the central business district of Mbarara City on Kabale-Mbarara Road (P.O. Box 40, Mbarara, Uganda). Commenced in the 1930s as a nursing school for South-Western Ankole, it was elevated to a district hospital in the 1950s and to a Regional Referral facility in the early 1990s. Since the establishment of Mbarara University of Science and Technology in 1989, it has served as its teaching hospital for doctors, nurses, pharmacists and laboratory technologists, also hosting interns from Bishop Stuart University, Mayanja Memorial Hospital, Mutolere and other institutions.

  • Bed Capacity: Official 350 beds; functional capacity of ~600 beds (noted for ‘floor cases’ due to high demand).
  • Catchment: Over 4 million people across Mbarara, Bushenyi, Ntungamo, Kiruhura, Ibanda, Buhweju, Rubirizi, Mitooma, Isingiro and referrals from Kabale, Masaka, Fort Portal, plus patients from Rwanda, Tanzania, DRC and Burundi.
  • Mandate: Provide comprehensive, super-specialized health services; conduct tertiary health training and research; contribute to national health policy.
  • Relevance to this role: The hospital’s Diagnostics Department is a core service pillar, offering laboratory diagnostics that underpin clinical decision-making across internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology, emergency and community health. The Medical Laboratory Technician will be critical to maintaining quality, timely diagnostics, biosafety and quality control in this high-volume regional referral setting. A new three-block complex and a Master Plan for decade-long development are already underway, supported by Government and partners (including USAID G2G for HIV services).
