Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital is inviting suitably qualified candidates to fill a vacant post of Medical Officer in its Private Wing in Mbarara, Uganda. This is a Full-time position under the health sector. The role is based at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, Mbarara City, Uganda, with a duty station listed as Uganda. Work Hours: 8 hours. Base Salary: Not Disclosed. The Medical Officer will provide comprehensive clinical care across outpatient, inpatient and emergency settings within the private wing and support the hospital's mandate as a regional referral and teaching hospital for Mbarara University of Science and Technology.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Diagnose and treat a wide range of medical conditions in outpatient and inpatient settings.
• Order and interpret diagnostic tests, laboratory results, and imaging studies.
• Prescribe appropriate medications, therapies, and treatment plans.
• Perform medical procedures (suturing, incision and drainage, lumbar punctures) as required.
• Provide emergency care and stabilize critically ill patients.
• Document patient histories, examination findings, and treatment progress thoroughly.
• Refer complex cases to specialists and coordinate multidisciplinary care.
• Participate in health education, disease prevention, and community outreach programs.

Qualifications, Skills and Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) or equivalent - Level of Education: Bachelor Degree.
• Minimum experience of 12 months (1 year) in a clinical setting.
• Must be registered (or eligible for registration) with the relevant medical council and competent in clinical diagnosis, emergency care and minor procedures.
• Strong skills in ordering and interpreting diagnostics, prescribing, clinical documentation, and patient stabilization.
• Ability to work in a busy referral and teaching hospital environment, coordinate multidisciplinary care and participate in community health activities.
• Excellent communication, professionalism and commitment to patient safety and quality care.

About Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital

Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital is a government-owned referral and teaching hospital for the Medical School of Mbarara University of Science and Technology, located in Mbarara City, Western Uganda. Established in 1940 (originating as a nursing school in the 1930s) and elevated to Regional Referral status in the early 1990s, the hospital has a bed capacity of 600 and is the referral hospital for the Western Region, specifically serving Mbarara, Bushenyi, Ntungamo, Kiruhura, Ibanda, Isingiro and surrounding districts. It also attracts interns from Bishop Stuart University, Mayanja Memorial Hospital and St. Francis Hospital Mutolere. The hospital provides specialized services including Internal Medicine, Obstetrics/Gynaecology, Paediatrics, General Surgery, Urology, ENT, Neurosurgery, Orthopaedics, Emergency Medicine, Diagnostics, Pharmacy and Community Health, and is currently implementing a Master Plan expansion including a newly completed three-block complex. For Medical Officers, this offers exposure to diverse, super-specialized caseloads, academic collaboration with MUST, and opportunities for tertiary training, research and innovation in a high-volume referral setting.
