The Diocese of Jinja is a vibrant Catholic community located in the heart of the Busoga region in Eastern Uganda, officially established on 5 August 1966 after being carved out of the former Diocese of Kampala, with its Episcopal See in Jinja town. It serves all districts of Busoga (Jinja, Kamuli, Iganga, Bugiri, Kaliro, Buyende, Namayingo, Namutumba, Luuka, Mayuge) through evangelization, education, healthcare and holistic human development, currently comprising 45 parishes, 45+ schools, 12 health centres and serving 50,000+ Christians. The hospital is part of the network coordinated by the Uganda Catholic Medical Bureau (UCMB) - https://ucmb.co.ug/ - the health office of the Roman Catholic Church in Uganda and technical arm of the Health Commission of the Uganda Episcopal Conference. Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct antenatal assessments and provide appropriate maternal health education.
- Monitor pregnant women and identify potential complications.
- Provide care and support during labour and delivery.
- Monitor maternal and fetal wellbeing during labour.
- Assist with normal deliveries in accordance with professional standards.
- Recognise and promptly escalate obstetric emergencies.
- Provide immediate newborn care and assess the condition of the newborn.
- Support breastfeeding and maternal-infant bonding.
- Provide postnatal care to mothers and newborns.
- Administer prescribed medicines and treatments.
- Maintain accurate maternity and patient records.
- Provide family planning and reproductive health education.
- Promote infection prevention and control.
- Participate in emergency obstetric and neonatal care.
- Provide compassionate care while respecting patients' dignity, privacy, culture, and choices.
- Participate in clinical handovers and multidisciplinary teamwork.
Qualifications, Skills and Requirements
- Recognised professional qualification in Midwifery - 3 positions require Diploma in Midwifery and 4 positions require Enrolled Midwifery (Certificate) with specialty training in maternal and neonatal care.
- Registration with the appropriate professional regulatory body (Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council).
- Valid practising licence.
- Relevant clinical experience is an advantage; 12 months experience indicated.
- Ability to provide safe, respectful and evidence-based midwifery care across antenatal, intrapartum, postnatal and newborn care.
- Knowledge of emergency obstetric and neonatal care and infection prevention and control.
- Strong communication, compassionate care, cultural sensitivity, and teamwork skills.
- Commitment to Christian values, safeguarding, and Diocesan recruitment policies (reference checks and safeguarding screening required).
