About Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital
Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital is a government-owned regional referral and teaching hospital for Mbarara University of Science and Technology, located in Mbarara City, Western Uganda. Founded in the 1930s as a nursing school for the Ankole region, it became a district hospital in the 1950s and a regional referral hospital in the early 1990s. With a bed capacity of 600 (official 350 beds), it is the referral hospital for the Western region serving over four million people in Mbarara, Bushenyi, Ntungamo, Kiruhura, Ibanda, Buhweju, Rubirizi, Mitooma, Isingiro and beyond (Kabale, Masaka, Fort Portal, Rwanda, Tanzania). Its mission is to provide comprehensive, super-specialized health services, conduct tertiary health training, research and contribute to health policy.
Relevance to this role: The Pharmacy and Stores Department comprises General Stores, EMHS Stores, Inpatient Pharmacies (including Private Wing Pharmacy), Outpatient Pharmacies, Waste Management and Oxygen Plant. The hospital has a strong focus on patient medication safety and pharmacovigilance, making the Pharmacy Technician role critical for accurate dispensing, inventory control, cold-chain management and patient counselling in the Private Wing.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Dispense prescription medications accurately under the supervision of a pharmacist.
- Label and package medications, providing clear instructions on dosage and administration.
- Manage pharmacy inventory, including receiving, stocking, and rotating medicines and supplies.
- Maintain proper storage conditions for drugs, including cold-chain management.
- Process prescriptions, verify patient information, and handle billing or insurance claims.
- Counsel patients on proper medication use, side effects, and storage.
- Prepare extemporaneous preparations (creams, mixtures) as prescribed.
- Ensure compliance with pharmacy regulations, drug control, and record-keeping requirements.
Qualifications, Skills and Requirements
- Education: Bachelor's Degree (Level of Education: Bachelor Degree as advertised).
- Experience: Minimum of 12 months (1 year) of relevant experience in pharmacy practice/dispensing.
- Knowledge of dispensing, labelling, packaging and inventory management procedures.
- Familiarity with cold-chain management and proper drug storage conditions.
- Ability to verify patient information and process prescriptions accurately.
- Skills in patient counselling on medication use, side effects and storage.
- Competence in preparing extemporaneous preparations (creams, mixtures).
- Understanding of pharmacy regulations, drug control and record-keeping requirements.
- Attention to detail, accuracy and compliance with pharmaceutical standards.
