Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital is inviting suitably qualified candidates to fill the vacant post of Porter in its Private Wing on a contract basis. The Porter provides essential non-clinical support to ensure safe, dignified and timely movement of patients, equipment and supplies within the hospital.

About Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital

Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital is a government-owned referral and teaching hospital for the Medical School of Mbarara University of Science and Technology. Founded in 1940 (originating in the 1930s as a nursing school for Ankole region), it was elevated to District Hospital in the 1950s and to Regional Referral Hospital in the early 1990s. It became a teaching hospital when Mbarara University of Science and Technology was established in 1989, also training interns from Bishop Stuart University, Mayanja Memorial Hospital and St. Francis Hospital Mutolere.

The hospital has a bed capacity of 350 official beds (600 with expansions) and serves over four million people in Western Uganda. Its Mission is to provide comprehensive, super specialized health services, conduct tertiary health training, research and contribute to health policy. Beneficial to Porter applicants, the hospital operates 24 hours with busy inpatient, diagnostics, theatre, radiology, laboratory and mortuary services where porters play a critical role in patient flow, infection prevention and clinical support.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Transport patients safely between wards, departments, and diagnostic areas (radiology, theatre, laboratory).
  • Assist patients in and out of wheelchairs, beds, and stretchers with care and dignity.
  • Transfer medical equipment, supplies, and specimens between departments.
  • Assist with lifting and moving deceased patients to the mortuary when required.
  • Respond to porter calls promptly and prioritize urgent requests.
  • Maintain cleanliness and functionality of wheelchairs, stretchers, and trolleys.
  • Follow infection control protocols when handling patients and equipment.
  • Support nursing and clinical staff with general non-clinical tasks as needed.

Qualifications, Skills and Requirements

  • Education: High School Certificate (high school level - UCE/UACE) - Level of Education: high school.
  • Experience: Minimum 12 months (1 year) of relevant experience.
  • Skills & Attributes:
    • Ability to handle patients with care, empathy and respect for dignity
    • Physical fitness for lifting, moving patients and equipment
    • Knowledge of infection control and hygiene protocols
    • Reliability, punctuality and ability to respond promptly to urgent calls
    • Good communication and teamwork with clinical and nursing teams
    • Ability to maintain and clean mobility equipment
